Guggenheim Museum Exterior Colour

A Note from the Paint Analysts

Norman R. Weiss, Glenn Boornazian and Amanda T. Trienens

Paper Summary

In the previous issue of this journal, Angel Ayon wrote on some of the dilemmas of conservation philosophy that were debated during the work recently undertaken at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York City. His discussion of the apparent tension between ‘original design intent’ and the preservation of historic building fabric was focused on four technical aspects of the recent work. One of these, the investigation of the evolution of the building’s exterior colour, was undertaken by our firm, Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc., and it is our intent to clarify a few of the points that specifically related to our research.
